America's Top Mayors for Sustainability The pursuit of sustainability relies on the leadership of local officials, most notably city mayors. Although mayors are not the only city leaders whose support is important, when a mayor lends his or her support to the endeavor, others in the city listen. I have selected a group of such mayors – the current leaders who really “get it” when it comes to sustainability and the environment. In many cases, these mayors were preceded by equally important sustainability leaders. For example, while I list Mayor Potter from Portland as an outstanding leader on sustainability, his predecessor, Vera Katz, was a supporter of sustainability in her own right. The success of any city’s sustainability effort must rely on the continued and re-invigorated support of subsequent mayors. Below is a list of 15 current mayors (in no particular order) who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to promote their city’s respective sustainability efforts. If you would like to nominate your own mayor for inclusion here, contact me at info@ourgreencities.com.
